A WrestleMania match between Bret "Hit Man" Hart and Shawn Michaels was inevitable, as they were the two greatest Superstars of the time. World Wrestling Entertainment officials recognized the significance of the bout and soon realized that a traditional one-on-one encounter would not be enough. As a result, the main event of WrestleMania XII was a 60-minute WWE Iron Man Match. Whichever Superstar scored the most decisions via any method – pinfall, submission, countout or disqualification – within a 60-minute span would be declared the winner.
The audience was absolutely captivated, as neither man was able to secure victory in the allotted 60 minutes. With no true winner declared, the match was ordered to go into sudden death overtime. In overtime, Michaels was able to secure the victory after hitting Hart with Sweet Chin Music.
The WWE Championship victory was a long time coming for Michaels, who nearly broke down after being handed the championship.
